Earlier today people reported that their CPU useage was going full throttle while omerta was open, some also had antivirus alerts about a 'trojan virus' named coinhive.
After investigating this further one could see that barafranca's code cointaned a script named 'Coinhive'[1]
[1] https://prnt.sc/hadbqu
One player confronted the main developer about this but were told that it was a test and a mistake[2] and just an attempt to replace the current CAPTCHA, and that it was removed right away. But others report that it stayed up for atleast two hours.
[2] https://prnt.sc/hadd3r
If one were to take a glance at coinhive's webpage one would see this ' Monetize Your Business With Your Users' CPU Power ' [3]
[3] https://coinhive.com
These malicious tricks to mine cryptocurrencies without the users knowledge has been used by various sites, including piratebay[4] and even large primetime dot-com sites like showtime[5].

[5] https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/09/25/showtime_hit_with_coinmining_script/
So what do we get from all of this? By the looks of it the omerta crew tested a system to see if it could replace the current captcha system, but this is a system that will use your CPU to mine bitcoins. It was not posted anywhere that this test would take place, and I, and hopefully some of you as well, find it disturbing that my, and your, computer could be used to mine cryptocurrency without our knowledge, even if it was just for a few hours.
Discuss it amongst yourself, but keep it civil please.

Instead of having to type 3 letter codes (the old system), or the new system where you have to pick which mexican hut is a storefront(the current system) the page would use your CPU (your processor) to mine cryptocurrencies (bitcoin etc) for the profit of the owners of the site.
Sure, you'd get rid of having to prove that you are a human being now and then, but your computer power would be used against your will and without your knowledge. Thats a pretty big nono for my privacy conserns.
What I advice everyone to do is to download a pluggin like uBlock (which murderinc linked down below here) to block activities like this.

If all your tech savvy people could give me something to block this in Safari it'd be appreciated :D
I kept having an warning that Omerta page was. using too much and being reloaded but had no idea what it meant...
I don't even know what the "risk" of it is to us users but doesn't seem nice...

(Assuming we're talking about Desktop Safari. On mobile, you could try the Adblock Plus app from the store, but I'm not sure if that blocks Coinhive.)

well, nice attempt. cryptocurrencies are going off the charts these days.
the surprise here is how they didn't try to do it earlier.

So NoCoin filter is needed for Omerta: https://adblockplus.org/nl/subscriptions#type_other
Not sure how a crypto miner would be a good replacement for reCAPTCHA. That might work for comment spam bots and the like (by increasing the cost for the operators - they'd need a lot of servers to spam, making it unprofitable), but all currently active Omerta scripts are browser-based, and that hasn't really been different in years.
A browser-based script can do proof of work just as well as a real user's browser. You can't enforce a minimum hashrate either since Omerta would have to run on anything from a low-end phone to a browser on a modern desktop.
