Earlier today people reported that their CPU useage was going full throttle while omerta was open, some also had antivirus alerts about a 'trojan virus' named coinhive.
After investigating this further one could see that barafranca's code cointaned a script named 'Coinhive'[1]
[1] https://prnt.sc/hadbqu
One player confronted the main developer about this but were told that it was a test and a mistake[2] and just an attempt to replace the current CAPTCHA, and that it was removed right away. But others report that it stayed up for atleast two hours.
[2] https://prnt.sc/hadd3r
If one were to take a glance at coinhive's webpage one would see this ' Monetize Your Business With Your Users' CPU Power ' [3]
[3] https://coinhive.com
These malicious tricks to mine cryptocurrencies without the users knowledge has been used by various sites, including piratebay[4] and even large primetime dot-com sites like showtime[5].

[5] https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/09/25/showtime_hit_with_coinmining_script/
So what do we get from all of this? By the looks of it the omerta crew tested a system to see if it could replace the current captcha system, but this is a system that will use your CPU to mine bitcoins. It was not posted anywhere that this test would take place, and I, and hopefully some of you as well, find it disturbing that my, and your, computer could be used to mine cryptocurrency without our knowledge, even if it was just for a few hours.
Discuss it amongst yourself, but keep it civil please.

But Omerta has 24 million players..................
According to the homepage where one might be tempted into registering an account under the illusion that the playerbase hasn't slowly and steadily been eroded by consistent, non consensual sodomy from the owners/devs.
KCode at 17:20:00 on 14/11:
Hey guys,
I already explained to a couple of people and even some other people that tried and tested this with me.
First of all, two mistakes happened in here:
- This code was to be on DM only and not in any other version, it failed (for the coders, you can see on 1st print screen that the variable "$game_config.extension" is actually written instead of used as argument - this was due to a bug on Smarty) [it was fine on local-dev].
- The import script was what caused the CPU usage, there is a line that would activate the proof of work straight from opening - this was not the idea, most of people didn't get any CPU usage, only some people got it because we were using the amount of bustouts and the people that would visit jail page to test this.
So, after mistakes explained, the concept of our new jail includes creating some activity on the page that doesn't require captcha to verify human behaviour, this concepts works as proof of work and it works by using and detecting the movements of mouse, typing of keyboard and some extra proof of work related to coinhive.
As soon as I got the reports of CPU usage, I rushed to computer and reverted the changes.
For the people that are suspicious of mining activities since Coinhive can also be used for that:
- It's impossible to do any mining on a site with less than 500k to 1M users, everything under would generate something like 0.001$ PER DAY.
You can read more about the part that we've implemented of Coinhive in: https://coinhive.com/#captcha
Our new jail anti-script method will be back later in the next patch again and I wlll make sure to do some extra testing.

Yeah i remember progs like Utorrent where using their client to mine Bitcoins back in 2015 ...
AFAIK The Pirate Bay still runs a cryptocurrency miner on their site.
Most of these sites claim they moved on to miners because lots of ppl are using adblock types of software these days to block the ads they make money from to run their servers.

Instead of having to type 3 letter codes (the old system), or the new system where you have to pick which mexican hut is a storefront(the current system) the page would use your CPU (your processor) to mine cryptocurrencies (bitcoin etc) for the profit of the owners of the site.
Sure, you'd get rid of having to prove that you are a human being now and then, but your computer power would be used against your will and without your knowledge. Thats a pretty big nono for my privacy conserns.
What I advice everyone to do is to download a pluggin like uBlock (which murderinc linked down below here) to block activities like this.

Anyone wants to explain really simply what this really is to a super noob?

HOW is this a privacy concern?
This is a retarded feature to make us pay more, while facilitating scripts.
KCode (17:20:00 - 14-11)
Hey guys,
I already explained to a couple of people and even some other people that tried and tested this with me.

This is complete bullshit.
If you use the CPU hashing power from 200/300 omerta users you can make a decent profit per day mining altcoins like ethereum and monero.
