There is an online platform, I can't remember it's name, where you can "sell" downloads for free and ask for a tip/donation. They take the view that VAT does not apply to tips/gratuities. It seems like it's a bit of an avoidance scheme but he reality is, if the customer really doesn't have to give the tip, isn't coerced into doing so and isn't even given a rcommended price, then it really is outside the scope of VAT.
dunno how true this actually is.

While I'd like to believe that the crew is making shit up to rip us off, there is some truth to their story. I don't think the donation codes we buy can be marked as actual donations. It's a product, and they're selling it with the sole purpose of making money. Which makes it turnover and it should be taxed.
The mission of Omerta Ltd nowadays is to make money and anyone claiming that they're using their donation code income to do noble things is liar. The reason they never got looked into by tax authorities is probably because it's only a small company, but it makes perfect sense that they're being forced to charge VAT for donation codes.
What's weird about all of this is why they aren't charging VAT for other donating methods, would be nice to get a more detailed explanation about that.
