72 hours frame is just an excuse they use depending on who you are, and who got akilled. I've seen plenty people exceed the 72 hour fram and still get a revive. When you get a revive they transfer the rp from your rebirth to your revived account.
You can get a revive if you've been killed by a cheater or if you've been wrongfully akilled

Here are some statistical info about the existing fams which i gathered from beyond. ( didnt count this round.)
My comments about these stats which are below ;
Righelli is the most aggressive fam depending on their ratio ( 5 wars for per version they have started.)
Marazzino is also another fighter fam (103 wars ) also started up in 24 versions with the same name _o_
Gambino, Provenzano, Trafficante also had started up in many versions (19, 21, 23) but their war amounts are too less. ( huggers ? )
Persico, Lusa, Aeterna also have good ratios about involving wars depending on their short past. If they keep going on with the same names, they will pass many older fams in a couple of versions later.

Friendlist is the magic word. I never buy myself out, but i've been a topbuster+ranker on a couple of versions. If you start early and send friend requests to other busters you'll get out within a few seconds when busters start becoming better. I doubt any of the top busters have bought themselves out after let's say associate or mobster.
You are touching a good problem though. It's very hard figuring out how to rank properly as a newcomer, since most families don't take in and school you anymore. And the game has never been very clear about this. There has always been a lot of secrecy about what f.e. a bust brings you in term of rp and in term of account strength. Or group crimes. Or pretty much everything for that matter.

If you're referring to buyout money: I've stopped ranking with busts after they removed bust rp and made it to page 1 multiple times (first GF in 4.6 or so, AM I COOL YET BEST ACCOUNT EVZ XERANO CAN CONFIRM).
In terms of account strength, busting could still be worth it even without buyout money (or maybe just using the money you make yourself). Plenty of families also boost their top accouns heavily with fambank or objects, if that's your thing.
