As someone who is contemplating returning to the game after a 5 year sabbatical, I have a different argument as to why the game is dying. Cheating has always been pervasive in Omerta, ever since the early days. But I don't think it's the reason for the exodus of players.

I believe that the reason for so many players leaving is by and large 1 reason which was brought about by 2 changes to the game. Those changes were the introduction of Lackeys, and the quick versions.

Let me explain.

Lackeys.
Up until 2.9 or whenever Lackey's were introduced, If you wanted to rank competitively, you were on your computer, and you were manually ranking. This forced players to focus on Omerta, whether that meant talking shop with friends on IRC, or pondering other aspects of the game... basic classical conditioning. And this wasn't just higher ups, this was everyone. Now, thanks to lackeys, aside from the higher ups, all the grunts have no real incentive to loiter around IRC and spend time actively involved in the game. This led to people spending less time in general investing themselves in Omerta. When people wander, they tend to lose interest, or find other things that appeal to them. This makes it way easier to walk away.

Quick versions.
I'm astounded to find that versions nowadays last little more than a month. This de-incentivizes players to create new accounts after death. The result? This means that once you die, there is once again a time to wander, and therefore lose interest in the game. Previously, with longer versions, players had a sunk cost investment in their families and friends. Essentially, they had put so much time into building their family and social circle in addition to their own account, that walking away after a single death just wasnt worth it... since with such a long runway, ranking back up and contributing ina meaningful way was a realistic aspiration. With such short versions, taking time off is incredibly easy as well (going AWOL for 1-2 versions), which further reduces the chances of a player returning, and ultimately damages the integrity of the community, because social circles have a constantly revolving door of people.

Conclusion.
Ultimately, the gradual decline in Omerta is not the result of cheaters, it's the decline in community. Less general activity resulting from the above decisions made by the powers that be. It's the reason everyone flocks here to discuss their ideas... besides being an open forum, everyone who is active also hangs out around here, and people can discuss their complaints ad nauseum. Why do you think #omerta is so dead all the time... why are public family channels silent. At the surface level, people find themselves becoming disinterested, and of course the first reason they think is, "cheaters make this game less fun"... but cheaters are just one unpleasant part of the game, and the dying community exacerbates their perceived impact.

I'm glad to see someone else echo the same concerns I have with the game. I left for 8 years and then came back for this version. It was very frustrating to see how much the game has changed in regards to overall attitude. Now, it's rank rank rank to get a family started and then start shooting people. Three weeks in, 1/3 of the players are dead and then they scurry like rats until the next version comes out. 5 weeks in, this game was basically a ghost town.

When I played, we didn't have lackeys and you didn't get to restart as an asso if a brug. It was a lot harder to rank quickly. Like you said, we had to work hard to get there. Members within a family were also a lot closer. When your family got shot, you didn't log off and hope your backfire killed someone. You sent out dets and countered. You cared more about your family's health. When your family went down, it pissed you off and made you work harder to rank back up and kill the SOBs who killed it.

I died 2 times this version. My first acct died as a Brug... my second as a Soldier and my current acct is a Chief... 2 days from brug, but not worth ranking anymore since the version is over. I don't understand why so many others were so unwilling to re-rank. We'd still have a fairly strong version going. I admittedly used lackeys a lot, but I will also say that it caused me to not be as close to my account as I was back in 2.1 and 2.2. I DO like that you don't restart as ES unless you choose to. That was nice.

As you said, cheaters are only part of the problem. Lackeys hurt the overall feel of the game, because it takes the emotion out of building your account. Short versions lead to huge drop off of players after week 3. It's hard to remain emotionally attached to a game when it's in this state.

Hopefully, they will fix it.

I have the idea that admins need to find a shitload evidence before they can Akill a cheater
even not experienced players can point out wich accounts are dupes to fund topaccounts etc...
family started with a LC who later got Akilled for cheating after he/she handed over donspot, family dont get a punishment but they founded by cheating.
Family's who suffer Akills should be punished harder, maybe you cant catch all cheaters but make the risk bigger for a family when they have cheating members/tops.
Do not only remove the points from strenght & famlevel, just drop them 1-2 famlevels then family's will think twice before they invite empty dupes/scripters.

it simply pays off to have cheaters in your fam and thats the saddest part, more and more people retiring due to that ammount of cheaters. and if you report them it takes weeks before they get akilled sometimes and then the cheats allrdy payed off

They dont need any evidence, they can kill you without any explanation or reason. All in the terms and conditions, and often use that rational when they just dont want to explain in depth how they have found somebody to be cheating.
That being said there will be evidence for every kill they do, they just may not tell anyone what it is. That bit you will have to take on faith.

It is also very easy to cheat, you are discouraged from having multiple accounts on one IP, but it is not illegal as long as those accounts don't interact. With lackeys it is a doddle to set up as many accounts as you can afford to fund with DCs, as long as you aren't an idiot and use similar emails, passwords or interact between accounts on the same IP you will be fine.
The problem comes where we all know some accounts are spare dupes that will be taken over when the original dies. If people need evidence to allow an akill, then this is only possible retrospectively. So when the account taken over is used for something you can see it is a takeover and kill it, and maybe reverse whatever damage it did.

However with versions as short as they are this is never found, there are hardly any crew members to do checks, they rely entirely on the autofilters around IP to flag possible dupes and where other users tell them to check. There just isnt the time, crew or desire. So if you have doubts about any account send in a ticket, explain why and they will look.
Even though something is blindingly obvious to you and me doesnt mean it will be to an admin though, so dont expect they will just kill these accounts.

if the players help the crew things will get better, and if the crew can also take on board a few suggestions here (some of which are very good, bring back the UG!) then the game can improve very quickly.
I fear that there is limited desire to do this, I hope that I am wrong, this game used to be great and currently is a bizarre comedy parody of itself.

Still alot of good honest gamers that will support it if it helps itself.

well said Denwatts, and for your information, I had a talk with 2 admins last week about bring back UG and volunteered, but the answer was they dont have time for an UG.
I also pointed out about that there is too much ingamecash/bullets like I posted here before in a longer post and the answer was, I never looked at the game in that way, yes shocking an admin that doesnt look at the game that way so we basicly are fucked with such admins, we need admins who really wanna improve the game, an UG that look at the game with the eye of a player and not look as an admin.
I am sure there are lots of people that would help, I offered but was rejected :( but lots of other who just want to help and enjoy the game. I genuinely hope they accept some of the offers of help, cos you cannot moan that you dont have enough time and refuse people who offer and not look a bit of a dick frankly.
I agree, they ruin last fun parts of the game with their arrogancy

I have many many friends that stopped playing this game cause of the cheaters, they say "why would I put time and effort in making a good account when there are so much cheaters". I can't say they are wrong. Priority has to be to make this game almost cheater free (100% cheat free won't ever happen, but 95%+ cheat free would be very nice).

Admins i want the same akill wave we already saw for scripters, but now also for share, dupe and fund accounts please. It doesn't make sense that most people that got akilled are firstly being reported. Why admins can't investigate things themselves. If a chief account has for example 5k bullets 0 bodyguards and he has sent like 60 million to a good account he is funding he should be akilled (and the account that received it should be punished also with taking money/bullets away).

Take some action against sharing/duping/funding please admins.

The whole HoF thing is a big joke, its to easy still to win with a pact and some deals made in irc for some vouchers.
Just make it more difficult to win a star or delete the whole HoF system
Family's who win a HoF should have acclompished something that is hard to get, and like another poster allready said: fams with a certain ammount of Akills should be disqualified from earning a star. Of the remaining families, there are 3 who have 6 or more Akills. There's just too much gained allready with the cheats.
So cheating pays off at the end, make it like this and then a HoF winner achieved something for real

1 fam = gold
2 fams= silver
3-4 fams = bronze

Same for family started with a LC who later got Akilled for cheating after he/she handed over donspot, family dont get a punishment but they founded by cheating.
Family's who suffer Akills should be punished harder, maybe you cant catch all cheaters but make the risk bigger for a family when they have cheating members/tops.
Do not only remove the points from strenght & famlevel, just drop them 1-2 famlevels then family's will think twice before they invite empty dupes/scripters.

80% of playerbase is crying about short versions but still a big part of them join the family's who make it happen, you cant change the mindset of players but admins/devs can change the game.
make it harder to rebuild after a war, there is simply to much ingame cash and bullets these days with the businessspots. with sluggs you buy 20-24k a day
In old days we where happy to have 120k when we became bruglione, now we have 120k as assassin
get rid of the moneyspots, remove the 1000 bullets an hour and go back to 400 and maybe 600 with 100% raceform then family's need more time to rebuild so versions will take longer and then it might even pay off to re-rank after you died and get even with your killers

actually that could work or maybe put a limit on how much bullets u can buy on obay... or remove 3k purchase... either way if admins dont do smth soon its all going to hell btw i say hi to all my friends this game havent played in a while .. Nooti here o/ o/
