"You KNOW that we are always keen to track and kill cheats - those players whose lack of brains and wealth of arrogance leads them to the folly of breaking Omerta rules and using scripts."
This is Brando's opening statement in a Latest News post about scripters. Shortly after, a massive number of accounts are placed on the pillory and killed off. Over 100 scripted accounts die on .com alone. Brando continues :
"We will NOT be showing you proof... just take it from us that we have NO REASON to kill innocents and wonder what the cheats would do if we shared with them the secret of our success... that's correct! They *would* adapt their script and go back to cheating. So SORRY but we will be keeping our cards close to our chest."
This action causes a very mixed reaction among the players, both cursing the scripters and sticking up for their friends who they believe are innocent. The admins of course continue to refuse to show any proof, in order not to let the scriptwriters adapt to the new methods of catching cheaters.
However the method DOES leak, simply because it's part of the HTML code of Omerta. It turns out to be a very simple trick. In one of the forms in Omerta, there is a hit=yes value that your browser automatically sends along (because it's told to do so by the form). Now, be it coincidence or not, the admins suddenly changed it to hit=Yes. Notice the capital 'Yes' instead of the all lowercase 'yes'.
Some of the less advanced scripts did not detect this change, and kept sending the lowercase hit=yes. This was all the proof that admins needed, and they pilloried everyone who sent hit=yes. So that's why a lot of lowranks were killed as well.
More advanced scripts of course detected this change and went under the admin's radar yet again.
